CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
of the Study.
In
this modern era, people use literature as a tool to express their words for
education, business, and hobbies. It’s simply literature means anything that is
written: time tables, dialogues, textbooks, travel brochures and so on. If you
are thinking of buying a bicycle or a motorcycle or a washing machine, you will
probably want to see the literature about it. If you are medical student, you
will have to read the literature about surgery. An advertisement for soap is as
much literature as Shakespeare’s plays or Dickens’s novels. So, we may conclude
all written materials, like this general grouping historical books, magazines,
newspapers, dictionaries, novels, catalogues, plays, short stories,
encyclopedias, etc. We can divide this large mass of material into two
different groups. The first one mainly presents information and the next mainly
gives some entertainment.
In
English we use the word in at least two different ways: Informative literature
and imaginative literature. Informative literature tells us about facts,
explanations, history, real ‘great’ life figure, etc. It tells us the world,
for instance, the life of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, Napoleon was defeated at
Waterloo, The story of Malcolm-X, etc. Its main purpose is to offer knowledge.
Hence, there is also imaginative literature that aims to arouse thoughts and
feelings. Its author expresses his ideas, his feelings, his attitude, he may
talks of things; people, etc. He wants to communicate feelings, not facts;
emotion, not information only. Imaginative literature according to many men of
letters and writers has fuller and deeper sense than informative literature.
Now when we use the term of literature in this book, we will be talking about
written material that deals with thought and feelings in imaginative or
‘serious’ literature. This kind of literature we will discuss the one that
appeals to the imagination rather than to the intellect; to emotion rather than
to the reason of the reader. Rees defines this kind of literature is writing
which expresses and communicate thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards life.
In addition, there is a little note for the definition of literature. Many of
the things we now call literature began to live without being written at all.
Long time ago before we can read the printed forms of their literary works,
there were narrators who moved from place to place to tell stories. Even today
we find folks songs and comic verses passing from person to person by word of
mouth. In English literature we see the word ‘ballad’, a simple, spirited poem
in short stanzas, narrating some popular story, there were old songs, legends,
folk stories, or folk tale handed down from mouth to mouth since people had not
known alphabets. Thus, we see what is called oral literature. Some epics were
told, several lyrics were presented orally, even they were sometimes “sung” or
accompanied with certain musical instruments to attract audience. Plays were
prepared and performed from place to place
There are some ways to express
ideas, especially in a literary work. There is a literary work that brings us
to the world of dreams and takes us away from reality. It has to be
contrasted with a literary work that needs our interpretation. Literature
is a personal expression of feeling including experience, idea,
motivation, confidence in the concrete description by using language.
Literature
is generally divided into three groups, respectively prose, drama, and poetry.
Prose uses language not in verse form, e.g., novels, short stories, novellas,
etc. Drama is play with its act(s) and its scenes in dialogues, conversations,
comedies, tragedies, tragic-comedies, etc. Poetry is the art of poets; poems,
in verse form, e.g. ballads, epics, lyrical poetry, etc.
Novel is a part of prose form beside short
story. The most of people read novel and short story. A novel expresses some
aspect of human’s love and existence. Because novel talks about human
activities, and describes what happened in surrounding, so it is
written in long composition. Novel is generally thought of as containing about
forty five thousand words or more (Kenney, 1966; 103). So novel is longer
narrative than short story and novella. .
Novel as a literary works has known
since eighteenth century in England. Prose has longer meaning because it covers
everything that is written as literary work but it includes some of non-fiction
work.
The elements of fiction are: character, plot, setting, theme, and style. Of these five elements,
character is the who, plot
is the what, setting is
the where and when,
theme is the why, and style is the how of a story.
A character is any person, personal, identity, or
entity whose existence originates from a fictional work or performance.
A plot, or storyline, is the
rendering and ordering of the events and actions of a story, particularly
towards the achievement of some particular artistic or emotional effect.
Style includes the multitude of choices
fiction writers make, consciously or subconsciously, as they create a story.
They encompass the big-picture, strategic choices such as point of view and narrator, but they also include the nitty-gritty, tactical choices
of grammar, punctuation, word usage, sentence and paragraph length and
structure, tone, the use of imagery, chapter selection, titles, and on and on. In the process
of writing a story, these choices meld to become the writer's voice, his or her own unique style.
Theme is the meaning or concept we are left with
after reading a piece of fiction. Theme is an answer to the question,
"What did you learn from this?" In some cases a story's theme is a
prominent element and somewhat unmistakable. Too much focus
on pinning down a story's theme can obscure the accompanying emotional context
or the story's intentional ambiguity (especially for contemporary fiction). In
fact, the function of some contemporary short stories, such as Donald
Barthelme's "In the Tolstoy Museum," is in part to make us confront
the limitations of traditional processes of establishing meaning and coherence.
In most cases, though, theme is still an important element of story
construction (even in its absence), providing the basis for many valuable
discussions.
Theme in the story which especially
account of the largest number of its elements in the simplest way
(Stantion, 1965: 30). The theme is something that has traditionally concerned
writers and that therefore is a legitimate concern of readers (Kenney,
1966; 88) Theme is simple the meaning of the story realize; the meaning the
story discovers. By theme we mean the necessary implication of the
whole story. Not as a spa ratable port of story. Theme in fiction is what is
able to make of the total experience rendered.
This
study is chosen because the writer is interested in studying literature. By
reading literature work automatically we can develop our knowledge and science.
And we can arrange the works that are chosen by the author. Besides that,
the writer can also get the author’s feeling or experiences from the
object of the study in “the lucky one” by Nicholas Sparks.
After reading and studying this novel, the writer can give some information
concerning with the novel through the way of play based on the theme of
the story. Because the reader of this research can get an understanding
of more general aspect through it such as human character, love,
relationship, behavior, mystery or massage of life that may not hate
someone else. And it often spoke about family, love and the luxury of a life in
the city.
The writer educated a study
concerning with Critical analysis of the theme “The Lucky One”. As we
know that theme has a very close with the story. To support the study, the
writer reviewed the reference material such as books and some literary
theories.
Realizing the fact above, the writer
decided to do as good as possible in the study of“ The Lucky One”
1.2 The Definition of Term
